Boys White comes oh-so-close in Canton Cup final, loses 5-4

Time wasn't on the White team's side in the championship game of the Canton Cup on Sunday afternoon.
Michigan Chill SBC White's goal with 10 seconds remaining gave the East Lansing-based side a 5-4 win and the Boys U-11 Gray trophy.
In addition to the last-second goal, Chill SBC White also scored twice near the end of the first half _ at the 30:42 and 32:32 marks.
The referee allowed play to continue past the 30-minute mark, mistakenly believing the game was to be played in 35-minute segments.
White team coach Mario Ramirez said the referee apologized to him after the game.
Coach Mario wasn't making any excuses, though, and instead had nothing but praise for both teams.
"I'll take a game like that any day of the week," he said. "Every single one of our players played like a champion."
And to that end, he accepted the Canton Cup runners-up trophy during a ceremony held off to the side of the field.
Alex Cross and Oliver Horswill scored two goals each, with Ollie's second tally tying the game at 4-4 five minutes into the second half.
Dylan Schmitzerle made a number of key saves, and two of his long punts directly contributed to two of the goals.

After the successful run during this weekend's tournament, United will be back at practice on Wednesday, not far from where it came oh-so-close to a Canton Cup championship.

Boys White beats Celtic Silver 4-3 in 3rd game of Canton Cup

Alex Cross scored his fifth and sixth goals of the Canton Cup as the boys White team beat Canton Celtic Silver 4-3 Sunday morning.
United led 4-0 at the half and held on as Celtic Silver scored three unanswered goals, the last with about a minute remaining.
Coach Mario Ramirez said his United team played equally well in both halves.
"(Celtic Silver) just came out more aggressive in the second half, that's all," he said. "Our kids played fantastic."
The White team's other goals were scored by Madison Grieb _ who also assisted on Alex's second goal _ and Riley List.

Now, United waits. It finished the tournament at 2-1 with a plus-2 goal differential. If the winner of the Goodrich White/Michigan Tigers Blue game prevails by fewer than three goals, United moves on to Sunday afternoon's Boys U11 Gray division championship game.

Boys White loses 2-1 in 2nd game of Canton Cup

The boys White team didn't fare as well in Saturday's second Canton Cup game, losing 2-1 to Goodrich SC White.
Alex Cross' breakaway goal at 38:26 _ his fourth of the tournament _ cut Goodrich's lead in half, but United wasn't able to produce an equalizer.
Goodrich scored less than two minutes into the game and again at 23:47.
The game was played in only 40 minutes with no halftime because of weather delays earlier in the day that threw off the Canton Cup schedule.
The White team concludes its scheduled games with a 7 a.m. kickoff Sunday against Canton Celtic Silver.
A berth in the Boys Under-11 Gray division championship game is still within reach depending on how United fares on Sunday morning.

Boys White opens Canton Cup with 4-2 win

Alex Cross scored all three of his goals in the second half to lead the boys White team to a 4-2 win over Michigan Tigers Blue in United's 2012 Canton Cup opener Saturday morning.
The game was delayed due to lightning 7:36 in, but when the teams returned to the field, Riley List opened the scoring only a minute later.
That score stood until Alex's run down the right sideline ended with a bad-angle shot that found its way into the upper left corner of the goal 56 seconds into the second half. Liam Householder passed to Madison Grieb, who then fed Alex, as United worked the ball the length of the field in only a few seconds.
The Michigan Tigers drew within a goal at 2-1 at 7:43 of the second half, but another bad-angle shot from Alex five minutes later proved to be the game-winner. Alex also scored on a deflection at 19:26.
The Tigers' final goal, at 20:56, came via a penalty kick.
The White team's next game will be played Saturday afternoon against Goodrich SC White.
